Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh | September 16, 2025 — A 28-year-old woman was shot dead in broad daylight on a busy street in Gwalior on Friday by a man against whom she had filed a police complaint just days earlier. The shocking incident unfolded near Roop Singh Stadium, sending panic across the bustling area.

The victim, identified as Nandini, was returning from court when she was intercepted by accused Arvind Parihar, a local contractor. Eyewitnesses said Arvind blocked the autorickshaw she was travelling in, dragged her out, and shot her multiple times at close range before sitting next to her body on the road.

According to police officials, Arvind brandished his weapon when officers arrived at the scene. After a tense standoff, police used tear gas to overpower him and took him into custody. The pistol used in the crime has been seized.

Previous Complaints Ignored?

Nandini had lodged a complaint against Arvind on September 9, accusing him of harassment, intimidation, and deceit. She alleged that he had lured her into a sham marriage through an Arya Samaj ceremony despite already being married with children. She further claimed that he had been threatening her for months.

This was not her first police complaint. In 2024, she had accused Arvind of attempting to run her over with a car, and several disputes between the two had earlier led to criminal cases.

Despite these complaints, the accused was roaming free until the fatal attack.

Motive and Background

Police sources said Arvind was enraged over Nandini’s recent activities on social media, including a birthday celebration post with another man, which he allegedly perceived as an insult. Reports suggest he had also been harassing her online and making threats.

After the murder, he reportedly showed no remorse and even went live on Facebook holding the pistol, declaring the act gave him “relief.”

Aftermath

Nandini was rushed to JAH Hospital but succumbed to her injuries during treatment. The brutal killing has sparked widespread outrage in Gwalior, with questions being raised over the police’s failure to act on her earlier complaints.

Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh confirmed that Arvind has been arrested and booked for murder and illegal possession of arms. “The law will take its strictest course. We are also probing lapses in earlier complaints filed by the victim,” he said.

Women’s rights groups have condemned the incident, calling it yet another grim reminder of the urgent need for stronger mechanisms to protect women who report threats and harassment.
